Most Likely To Succeed

m o s t l i k e l y t o s u c c e e d

Did you know only 53% of university graduates get a job in their field after graduating?

Did you know we’ve also lost up to 1.7 million jobs due to technology overtaking the workforce?

The world is changing! And how come the education system has not changed since it was formed in the 1800s with militant and strict systems?

The education system needs to catch up to the ever-changing, technological, post-industrial world. But how?!

This movie “Most Likely to Succeed” was an incredible resource for introducing a new type of education. One where high school students had autonomy and freedom over their work, where there was no set schedule with math, socials and science blocks. Instead, every subject was explored through inquiry projects of student’s own choosing.

I could on and on and summarize the entirety of the movie, as I found it fascinating, but in reflection, I have many thoughts and questions about this philosophy of teaching.

The parents in the film always came back to the same question: why aren’t there books? Why aren’t there tests? I want my child to get into college. And I, too, question this same thing. If we remove all subjects and let students create their own schedule for the day, how does a teacher manage such chaos? How do we assess and evaluate? How do we make sure they’re learning… enough?

Professor Michael mentioned in class that we, as teachers, can introduce this type of teaching in our own classrooms through the new BC curriculum. This made me realize that all my professors have been showing me this type of teaching: through emphasizing cross-curricular activities, hands-on experiential learning, and student-led learning. It’s possible, and necessary in this day and age.

Through this film I’ve learned the value of cross-curricular activities, and will begin to curate lesson plans that foster the creativity and innovation in my students. I’m excited to see how that unfolds!

Here’s the trailer if you want to look more into it! 🙂
