With the New Year comes new ambition for being better, stronger, saving more money, or stopping that bad habit. As a student, I’ve let the busyness of school let some healthy habits slide, and here I’ll be exploring what “health and wellness” looks like as a student.
First off, let me explain the why behind my inquiry. I’ve battled health concerns the last 6 or so years, and have always traced it back to stress. As stress builds up in the body, it manifests itself in different ways for everybody. But take a look at these statistics!
- 53% of adults say they feel good about themselves after exercising
- 62% of adults who say they exercise or walk to help manage stress say the technique is very or extremely effective
- 43% of adults who report exercising specifically to help manage stress say they skipped exercise or physical activity in the past month when they were stressed
- 72% of Millennials say they exercise once a week or more, compared with 59% of Gen Xers and Boomers
- As a side note: on average, adults report that they spend 3.9 hours a day watching TV, 3.7 hours a day going online and 3.4 hours a day sitting at a desk
Thank you Article for these statistics.
When stress builds up, it’s easy to throw away the (feel-good) activity for the (stress-trigger) activity, like homework, making money, or social obligations. But it’s so counterintuitive to neglect the thing that helps you the most when life gets tough!
So in honour of the New Year, and being a stressed student, I’m going to be exploring health and wellness as a way to reduce the stress of school and life. Thanks for joining me!
